the Field Museum
With more than 200 scientists working across the globe, The Field Museum stands at the forefront of scientific research. This research leads to a better understanding of the world in which we all live, and it serves as an educational resource for all peoples, especially local communities. The Museum is an extension of the classroom, one that will contribute to the IIT/Field Museum IDS in a variety of ways. Each of the new curricula developed by the IIT/Field Museum team includes specific links to Field Museum resources, such as award-winning exhibitions, programs, and materials that enhance classroom learning. Several lessons include Field Museum field trips and/or extensive use of Harris Educational Loan Center materials and on-line Field Museum resources. Science teachers participating in this program will enjoy free Harris Educational Loan Center registration, as well as exclusive information on Field Museum events and programs before other schools. Our partnership with IIT will provide an opportunity for students and teachers to develop an extensive familiarity with The Field Museum as a resource for life-long learning. During the current school year, the IIT/Field Museum team will deliver 60 hours of professional development. The Field Museum will host several of these professional development days, focusing on the Museum collections and meeting Field Museum scientists through behind-the-scenes opportunities; training on focused field trips; how to use exhibitions to teach biology, chemistry, and eventually physics concepts; and the use of Harris Educational Loan Center materials in the classroom. The Museum offers an incredible array of resources that can be used by the IDS teachers to not only educate, but also to inspire.
With the newly recieved funding from the Motorola Foundation, the Field Museum is able to provide additional support to the High School Transformation Project. The funding has allowed for the purchase of new Harris Loan materials and transportation for the Field Museum field trip extension.
